Run 24: The Grind Begins

Description

Today was a 12 mile run where I felt my first challenge during the marathon training. The milage was heavy, and it took a toll on my body. As a result, it is time to start dialing in the training and diet as my weekly milage increases.

Thoughts

Today, my plan had me running 12 miles at a nice and easy pace. While the run went well and I was able to finish it, today was the first day I felt there was a roadblock at the 11th mile. It felt excruciating to push through from a mental perspective, and it was the longest mile I have ever run. In addition, my legs felt quite heavy and my run felt slow today. I think this is a consequence of the lackadaisical approach I have been taking to my training and diet, which I touch on later.

In addition, I felt a small pain in one of the tendons behind my knee. The one closest to the inside felt tight all run. It was not a hard pain, but I could definitely feel it during the whole run and after it was causing quite a bit of discomfort. I think this is a sign that I need to be stretching even more than I already have.

Both of these things (the difficulty and the injury) are wake up calls for me to dial in my training, stretching, and diet. I have been coasting on my athleticism for the first 6 weeks of this training schedule, but now it is time to dial it all in and give my body the best chance to succeed.
